Transformation in sports is mandatory: Mbalula
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula says transformation in sport is non-negotiable.
Mbalula's been briefing journalists in Johannesburg on the state of transformation in sporting codes, specifically rugby.
Earlier this year, the Agency for a New Agenda took SARU to court in an effort to prevent the Springboks from competing in this year's Rugby World Cup in England.
The party was unhappy with the number of black players in the squad that coach Heyneke Meyer announced ahead of the tournament.
Mbalula says an agreement on transformation was signed with SARU - who has a responsibility to ensure the policy is implemented.
"I'm under no illusion that when we went to the 2015 Rugby World Cup there was no way that SARU would have actually made the targets that we've agreed to of 50/50 in terms of the demographics of the national team. In terms of our own approach to transformation, it is organic. It is all inclusive," he said.
