Teacher unions welcome decision to halt new tax laws

Teacher unions have welcomed government's decision to halt implementation of the Taxation Laws Amendment Act for the next two years.
Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe made the announcement yesterday. The law puts a cap on how much of an employee’s provident fund or pension may be withdrawn when they leave a job.
It's intended to force workers to save for their retirement.

Sadtu's Nomarashiya Caluza says employees should have a say on their money.
"If you talk of the pension funds those are monies of the workers and they must have a say on how they must be saved and how they can be accessed by the workers," she said.
Natu's Allen Thompson says they've started a petition amongst those who are members of the pension fund regarding this matter.
"So that the entire laws are stretched because we cannot accept the situation where government want to convert the money of the workers into social grant," he said.
