Support for families after two youths die following alleged drug binge
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
Fifteen social workers have been deployed to assist the affected families following the deaths of two youths in KwaMashu apparently after taking a form of the drug ecstasy.
The two had been among a group of mainly high school pupils celebrating the end of the school term this past weekend.
More than 30 others were taken to hospital after apparently also taking the drug known as Mercedes.
Carol Du Toit is from the KZN branch of the Central Drug Authority and says incidences of drug abuse are on the increase among KZN youth.
"The drugs that they were using had been cut in addition to the chemicals which are traditionally in ecstasy which is mainly in MDMA. We know that in the past, substances such as rat poison, insecticide and various other substances have been added to the ecstacy," she said.
A police investigation is underway.
MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi is also calling on parents to keep a closer eye on their children's activities.
