Students haven't held their end of the bargain: Nzimande

Speaking at the Higher Education Imbizo that took place in Kempton Park, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has accused student leaders of agreeing to some decisions during closed meetings with him and other officials - and then changing their tune when they get back to their campuses.

University management, SRC leaders and parents were among those who attended the summit.

He has told delegates students leaders have been consulted on every major decision on the fees matter.

During a briefing last week, Nzimande urged students to return to class saying the protests - some of which have turned violent - are being led by a small group of students who are holding the majority to ransom.

Sparknig nation-wide unrest, the Minister made an announcement last month - that fees would be capped at 8% for the coming year while students from the 'missing middle' and those relying on by the National Student Financial Aid would not be subject to increases.

Nzimande made reference to a meeting where he says a maximum 6% fee increased was agreed on.

Meanwhile, Wits student leader Nompendulo Mkhatshwa said they were done talking about fee increases and want free education.

She and other student representatives were also unhappy that President Jacob Zuma arrived only to give the opening speech at the summit. Students then demanded that the President return to the venue and listen to their problem.
