Strike at UniZulu to intensify: Union
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union says it's planning on intensifying its strike at the University of Zululand.
Earlier this week, employees - joined by students, embarked on a protest over salary increments, insourcing and a demand that temporary workers be given permanent contracts.
The protests turned violent with a university truck being set alight and a police vehicle damaged.
Classes were then immediately suspended until further notice.
Nehawu's provincial secretary Phakama Ndunakazi says they are "fed up."
"As Nehawu we want to intensify our campaign. One, minister Comrade Blade must come to the university. Secondly, the portfolio committee must through the commission - do a forensic investigation," he said.
But UniZulu's Gcina Nhleko says Nehawu has tabled unreasonable demands.
"That is why the negotiations are at a locked stage at this moment. However, university management would like to ascertain that they still remain optimistic that the solution will actually be arrived at," she said.
It is understood there will be a meeting on Monday between university management and the union.
