SABC to play 90% local music
Updated | By News24
The African National Congress (ANC) yesterday welcomed the decision by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to play 90% local music on their stations from today onward.
ANC national spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa, said the party welcomed the “radical decision” the 18 SABC radio channels are to implement.
“The groundbreaking decision by the public broadcaster follows an important and successful consultative process with various representatives of the music industry throughout the length and breadth of the country,” Kodwa said in a statement.
He said the party believed the decision would empower local artists and also promote the African culture locally and to the rest of the world.
“We are confident that the people of South Africa will, equally, welcome the changes to local content offering across their radio stations. We support the decision to extend such offerings to SABC television and other digital platforms, which will also be implemented later this year. ”
This follows an announcement made earlier on Wednesday that all SABC owned radio stations would play mostly local music with an emphasis on kwaito, jazz and gospel music.
