Richards Bay and Empangeni - areas of most water wastage in KZN

With Kwazulu-Natal still in the grips of one of the worst droughts - officials in the uMhlathuze Municipality say the biggest water wastage is happening in the city centres of Richards Bay and Empangeni and their surrounding suburbs.

They are again urging residents to use water sparingly - as last month's heavy rains did not see dam levels improving - as was expected.

The City's Mdu Ncalane says the Goedertrouw Dam and Lake Mzingazi - which serve as the region's main water sources - are sitting at 18.52% and 43% respectively.

He says restrictions from 8 in the evening to 5 in the morning remain in place - saying it may take longer for water to reach some - due to the demand required at the time the water supply is switched on.

Ncalane says the city is working hard to attend to water leaks.

"We encourage people to take care of the taps and every leaks within their houses, and not only from outside. We also encourage them to report leaks to our central system so that our water technicians and attend to them as quickly as possible, and we also do our duty as a city to ensure wherever we see any leaks - we fix it as soon as possible."
