Rhodes University joins fee protest

Grahamstown police are closely monitoring protest action at Rhodes University, where students are barricading roads leading to the institution.

It is believed that they are protesting over increased fees for 2016.
The online editor of a student publication at Rhodes, Mako Muzenda has described the scene.
''The protest begun around midnight and no one is quite sure who organised the protest yet and the organisers have remained anonymous. Basically, their aim is to get the university's attention and to force them to address the issue of the fees,'' she said.
Management has suspended all academic activities for the day.
Public order police have also been deployed to the University of Cape Town after some students this morning blocked off entrances to the institution. They are saying #UCTFeesMustFall.
Meanwhile the academic programme at Wits University also remains suspended. The institution’s council is preparing to meet with the assembly today.
An agreement was reached and signed between management and student leaders following a meeting on Friday that lasted through the night.
They agreed that next year’s proposed fee increase of 10.5% will be put on hold for now.
Angry student protests brought lectures at the campus to a halt for several days last week. Wits had said it will meet with students again later today.
