Probe into Verulam granite slab collapse
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
The Department of Labour has launched an investigation after a worker was killed when a granite slab collapsed at a company in Verulam, north of Durban.
The Department says three other people, including the company owner, were hurt at KatzStone Granite and Quartz on Friday afternoon.
Initial reports suggest they'd been removing granite slabs inside a container when the incident occurred.
It's alleged that one of the workers was trapped beneath a slab and died due to weight pressure.
Labour's Mokgadi Pela says an investigation into the cause is ongoing.
"They were injured while removing granite slabs so we've launched a Section 31 investigation that means we want to get to the bottom of the cause of the accident.
"This is so we can prevent a repeat of the accident. Should anyone be be found liable what we are going to do is recommend prosecution by the National Prosecuting Authority but for now we don't want to [project] the issue," he said.
