Probe into Kennedy Road, Glebelands housing issues
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has been meeting with residents of Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi behind closed doors.
She and Deputy Public Protector, Kevin Malunga are there to begin their investigation into the killings and living conditions at the notorious hostel.
She is meeting residents in the community hall under heavy police presence.
Earlier, Malunga said they would soon turn their attention to housing issues at the Kennedy Road Informal settlement.
According to the report, the 700 units cost about three times more than they should have and questions have been raised about the shoddy workmanship.
The project was meant to assist those whose homes were damaged when fires razed hundreds of shacks to the ground.
Malunga says the housing project and issues of overcrowding are what they'll be looking into.
"I assure the people of eThekwini that we are following this up because at the end of the day it is your taxes. These are your taxes and we have a duty to ensure that they are used optimally and efficiently," he said.
