Merebank family hopeful for a miracle to save daughter with Leukaemia
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
A Merebank family is praying that a bone marrow and blood drive today will save the life of their 20 year-old daughter living with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.
Tashnika Rambali was diagnosed in December 2013 shortly after writing her matric exams. Since then, she has undergone numerous therapy sessions with her condition improving slightly.
But the cancer returned last year. Her condition has meant that she has had to put her studies aside after completing only 1 year of her Bio-Technology studies at the Durban University of Technology.
Her mother, Sharon Rambali, has told Newswatch that it has been difficult finding a bone marrow match, with her 24 year-old brother also not being a suitable match.
She says although the chances of finding a suitable match are 1 in 100 000 they are praying that the drive their holding with the SA National Blood Service and the Sunflower Fund will result in a miracle.
"We are praying for a miracle. That is our ultimate goal. The odds are really against her because we do not even have 100 000 people on the register at the moment," she said.
"In this kind of situation time is definitely not on our side. So the more we educate people about the urgency the better it is," Rambali said.
