She was speaking at the Durban ICC at the weekend during the 2015 Africa Peace Award attended by President Jacob Zuma, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi and the UDM's Bantu Holomisa.

Machel is the director of the Board of Trustees of the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes.

She presented the award to the African Union Commission.

Machel heaped praise on the AU for its response to the Ebola crisis.

"At the height of the Ebola crisis, the African Union Commission coordinated a comprehensive response from deploying over 700 mainly African medical professionals, experts and volunteers to raising over $30 million in donations from Africa's private sector," she said.

AU Commission chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said the continent's youth need to be empowered through education and taught to be tolerant.

"The dialogue must also include proper management of diversity because we see most conflicts on the continent are to a large measure, failure to manage diversity within the countries. And of course, terrorism is also on the rise," she said.
