LISTEN: Students are nervous in class: UniZulu

The university yesterday briefed media on numerous issues that have been plaguing the northern KZN institution including the sex for marks scandal, fake degrees as well as student and worker unrest. 

Vice Chancellor Xoliswa Mtose says while classes at all its campuses have resumed, concerns about the safety of students and staff remain.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Phinda Songca, says senior management engaged with the Deans of all faculties to come up with a teaching and recovering plan.

"So they needed to come up with details, specifics, numbers of hours lost per course - per module and that was done," he said. 

Yesterday, Mtose said sex scandals involving students and academics are not unique to the northern KZN institution. 

While, Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Neil Garrod said the issue around fake degrees was identified as a major problem in an Administrator’s report. 

The university has two campuses, namely, Richards Bay and KwaDlangezwa - with a total of 16 000 students. 

Professor Garrod says while the academic programme has resumed, recent violence and vandalism has again led to the

suspension of academic activities on the KwaDlangezwa campus.
