LISTEN: DUT suspends lectures
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The Durban University of Technology has suspended lectures, practicals and assessments for today and tomorrow following student protests on several campuses yesterday.
Management took the decision late yesterday after some classes were disrupted.
The SRC wants answers regarding historical debt and the 4 000 students who they claim qualify for NSFAS but are not getting funding.
LISTEN BELOW: SRC president Zama Mncube says many students have not received their qualifications as their fees have not yet been paid.
DUT's Alan Khan says there was no damage to property during yesterday's protests.
"On Wednesday DUT management, together with the SRC, will be meeting senior officials by the National Students Financial Aid Scheme and from the Department of Higher Education and Training who will be in Durban to discuss student funding matters for 2016 and 2017," he said.
Yesterday students at the Durban University of Technology made their way around the ML Sultan campus, removing students from lectures.
Students from institutions across the country have been protesting since Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande's announcement on fee increases for 2017. However, Mncube, says the demonstration is only partially linked to the national fees protests.
She says they have their own grievances that have been raised with management on several occasions
