Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa owes gratitude to the people of Mozambique for their support during the liberation struggle.
He was speaking at an event in Mbuzini in Mpumalanga, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the death of Mozambique's former president, Samora Machel.
Machel, who was married to former South African first lady Graca Machel, was killed when his aircraft crashed in Mbuzini on October 19, 1986.
Ramaphosa says Machel dedicated his life to the liberation of South Africa and he died on while on a journey to ensure a peaceful and prosperous region.
"The commemoration of the Mbuzini tragedy affords us South Africans the opportunity to pay special tribute to the family of those heroes who fell on this soil at the height of our very own struggle," he said.
