KZN women's group speaks out on "Khwezi" silent protest
A KZN women's rights organisation has condemned the ANC Women's League for its response to four women who embarked on a silent protest at the IEC National Results Centre in Tshwane on Saturday night.
It also says that the IEC shouldn't have apologised to President Jacob Zuma. Four young women stood in front of the podium where Zuma was thanking those involved in the voting process this year. The placards they held referred, in essence, to Zuma's acquittal on a charge of raping a woman known to the media as Khwezi, ten years ago.
Cookie Edwards is a director at the KZN Network on Violence Against Women.
"There is a survivor out there who is in fear for her life who cannot speak out or spoke out and there was a stigma or backlash directed towards her. So people should not just ignore this. They should take it as a reality," she said.
"As far as the Women's League supporting what happened, I feel that new and fresh blood should be injected into that league," Edwards said.
"They need young blood - women who will stand for other women and not protect the perpetrator," she said.
