KZN teacher suspended for corporal punishment incident
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
A northern KZN teacher who was seen in a video beating her learners in class has been suspended pending an investigation into her conduct.
The video showing the teacher from Prince Tokotoko High School in Nongoma hitting the pupils sparked outrage online, with the Department of Education again condemning the use of corporal punishment.
Education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana has this morning visited the school.
He says after consulting with the principal, teachers, school governing body, learners and parents it became clear this was not the first time this form of punishment was used.
Dlungwana says while cellphones are not allowed in schools - they're grateful that another learner was able to capture the footage.
"It was a blessing in disguise. If it were not for that learner, we would not know today that this was happening at the school.
"We will not allow such incidents to take place in our schools and we will take action against anyone found to be in transgression with the law. This incidents are isolated - it is not all of our teachers involved in this thing," he said.
