KZN safety MEC concerned about attacks on municipal officials

Municipalities in KZN are being asked to conduct "thorough" security assessments on their officials - following an attempt on the life of the deputy mayor of the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality, this weekend.

Philani Shange's bakkie was sprayed with bullets as he returned to his Bulwer home after a party branch meeting.
Community Safety spokesperson Sipho Khumalo says Shange's attack comes just days after the murder of UThukela District Municipal Manager, Nompumelelo Mbatha.
"The MEC For Transport, Community Safety and Liaison - Mr Mxolisi Kaunda, and the cabinet of KwaZulu-Natal, is gravely concerned at what appears to be an unfortunate trend - where we have seen quite a number of senior municipal officers, including municipal managers, being targeted for attacking and killing. The management of police have been informed to keep an eye on newly-appointed people," he said.
