KZN Fireworks Association says it won't oppose loud fireworks
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KZN Fireworks Association says it would respect a ban on big bang fireworks but opposes restrictions on non-noisy fireworks.
The association says the latter form part of cultural and religious celebrations around Diwali. The comment comes after a petition was created in Durban North to ban big bang fireworks in the suburb. The petition has since been handed over to the area’s ward councillor.
Those who have signed the petition say loud crackers are harmful to animals, the sick and elderly. The association’s Rajendra Desai says the fireworks industry is moving towards the safe use of fireworks.
"We do not advocate the use of these loud fireworks. Those kind of fireworks have been banned in the last 2 years," he said.
"However there may be some old stock which are still in the hands of the public which police would have to monitor the use of," Desai said.
"Other than that I cannot see the need to ban non-noisy fireworks," he said.
