eThekwini Municipality's Health Department is yet to inspect the medical waste that washed up on several beaches north of the city.

By 5pm, officials said they are expecting the clearing of the waste to begin.
The municipality earlier today ordered the immediate closure of the Umgeni/Mangrove, Beachwood, Virginia and Glenashley beaches saying the medical waste poses a health risk to beach users.
Spokesperson, Tozi Mthethwa says the investigation by the Health Department will help identify the source of the waste.

"We are very concerned about what we have found here and we will leave no stone unturned in investigating who is responsible for disposing of medical waste. We also want to warn members of the public not to interfere in any way with these pills and condoms," she said.
30 workers have been tasked with clearing the affected beaches from now until 5 tomorrow morning.
