Hawks boss, Johan Booysen faces charges again
Updated | By Zongile Nhlapo
The National Prosecuting Authority has re-charged KZN Hawks Head General Johan Booysen for racketeering.
Booysen will appear in the Durban High Court on Friday alongside 27 members of the now disbanded Cato Manor Serious and Violent Crimes Unit which he headed.
The unit was accused of operating a death squad and arrested in 2012, facing a string of charges.
The case was dismissed in the Durban High Court two years ago after it found the decision by the NPA to prosecute was unlawful.
NPA spokesperson Advocate Luvuyo Mfaku says Booysen is accused alongside members of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit.
"What we can assure is that the NDDP signed the racketeering certificate, authorising the racketeering prosecution against General Booysen as well as 27 Cator Manor members," he said.
This as the Hawks have indicated they're heading to the Supreme Court of Appeal after the Durban High Court dismissed the unit's application for leave to appeal the decision to lift Booysen's latest suspension.
Last month, the Hawks announced a new provincial head of the unit Major-General Jabulani Zikhali despite the court ruling.
