eThekwini to swear in new Speaker, Mayor and Deputy Mayor

Returning and new eThekwini councillors have started gathering at Durban City Hall where today’s inaugural council sitting will be held.

The sitting which comes after the recent Local Government Elections will also see the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Speaker elected.


eThekwini Mayor elect Zandile Gumede has arrived at Durban City Hall.


Outgoing Mayor James Nxumalo and outgoing speaker Logie Naidoo are also in attendance.


Proceedings will begin with an address by the City Manager before the swearing in of councillors, the new speaker, Mayor and Deputy Mayor.


The ANC won the metro with 56.1% of the vote.


The DA secured 26.92% and the IFP 4.2%.


There's plenty of entertainment for political party supporters outside City Hall.


They’ll be able to watch proceedings on two big screens placed on the grounds of the precinct.
