eThekwini introduces water shedding
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka and Nushera Soodyal
eThekwini Municipality is confident its bid to save 91 000 kilolitres of water per day as required by the national Department of Water and Sanitation will be a success.
The municipality has announced the introduction of water cuts.
Spokesperson, Thulani Mbatha says the cuts are to ease pressure on the Midmar and Albert Falls dams and to save much needed water during the drought.
Mbatha says the cuts between 9pm and 4am are to allow reservoirs to fill up for the next day.
"This is so that when people need water the most in the morning then they have water available but this does not mean that people can then use water carelessly.
"We still need to save water. An intervention that has been undertaken at the moment is to just make sure that we don't run out of water," he said.

Mbatha says residents and businesses will experience an interrupted water supply until there is sufficient rainfall.
He says Midmar Dam that supplies areas like Pinetown and Umlazi has dropped to 46%.
Umgeni Water, which supplies water to eThekwini, has started to reduce water supply in order to control the demand and usage patterns.
These East Coasters feel overnight cuts are better.
Midmar Dam supplies Pinetown, Cato Ridge, KwaXimba, Umbumbulu, Georgedale, Hammarsdale, Shongweni, Salem, Umlazi, and parts of Folweni.
Albert Falls Dam supplies Durban North, Umhlanga, Verulam, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Newlands, Westville, Reservoir Hills, KwaDabeka, Clermont, Pinetown, Queensburgh, Chatsworth, Umlazi, and parts of Folweni.
