eThekwini contractors fear for lives following threats

eThekwini Municipality says they're looking into death threats made against city contractors.
A group of people belonging to a business forum are said to have beaten up and made death threats against workers at the city's electricity and water departments.
It's understood municipal contractors at both departments have received threats since last year.
Last week, a letter was received by workers allegedly warning that anyone seen working or driving work vehicles would find themselves in serious trouble.
Newswatch has been sent correspondence from an affected worker.
In it, managers are concerned about the safety of workers and trying to allay the fears of technicians who are worried they will not be compensated as they have only been showing up at work but not performing any duties because of the intimidation.
A member of the Delangokubona Business Forum has confirmed to Newswatch their members have been intimidating workers.
He however would not be drawn on what their reasons are for threatening city contractors.
"[There's a process still underway], so I cannot say anything right now," he said.
In a statement, the municipality says there have been financial implications for the city, with contractors having their cellphones and equipment stolen while on duty.
The attacks are also affecting service delivery, with many technicians reluctant to respond to emergencies at night.
