Education officials believe learners equipped for matric finals
Seven young boys and a 19-year-old teenager died in the blaze that broke at around 2am at the Lakehaven Children and Youth Centre in Sea Cow Lake.
Another 10 children and two caregivers survived the fire and are receiving counselling.
Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana has sent his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
Turning his attention to the exams that lie ahead, Dlungwana told a group of Grade 12s from various schools who gathered at the Public Service Training Academy in Glenwood, that he believed the department has done all it can to prepare learners for the exams through its academic improvement plan.
"The interventions include the provision of support to progress learners. Progress learners in Grade 12 are provided with strong support in the following manner - subject glossaries like all other learners, and dedicated camps for Maths, Physical Sciences, Life Science and English," he said.
Bavumile Shangase from Menzi High School in Umlazi says they’ve been preparing for exams since schools opened in January.
"What is most important and what we have been told is that we must believe in ourselves that we are capable of achieving all the objectives that was set for us by our teachers and to believe and trust in the system as it knows what is best for us," she said.
