Drought costs Vryheid farm workers their jobs
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
A commercial farmer in eMpangisweni in Vryheid says he has had to lay off more than 120 of his employees on his one thousand hectare farm.
Douglas Zondi who is also a chief in the area has currently hired 100 women to work on his citrus farm.
He says he has hired mostly widows on his farm paying them R2400 a month in an effort to fight poverty in the community.
Zondi says if it wasn't for the drought he would have hired 40 additional workers.

"I always hire about 200 people when I start harvesting vegetables and grain because of this drought people are all laid off.
"They are at home and they are crying especially because it's the beginning of the year they have to take their kids to school. That's a challenge," he said.
