Disruptions at UKZN PMB and Wits University campuses

Spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka says a group of students disrupted classes and the institution’s security personnel had to intervene.

He says one security guard was injured in the process of trying to restore order.

Addressing a group of journalists at the Westville campus, Seshoka also warned action would be taken against those behind an audio message that was circulated on social media - telling students to stay away as there would be a complete shutdown at the Howard College campus today.

He says while it's been business as usual at the Howard College, Westville and Edgewood campuses today - all campuses are under heavy police guard.

"We have lost buildings, we have not lost one building we have lost a number of buildings - up to four buildings this year. So it is in the interest of our students, it is in he interest of all our stake holders and our staff to ensure that they operate in a safe environment," he said.

News is coming in is that clashes have erupted again at Wits University between students and police following similar scenes yesterday.

Meanwhile in Cape Town while lectures remain suspended today due to fees protests, UCT workers gathered at lower campus earlier to discuss their grievances.

Patrick Maqhasha is one of them and explains their demands.

"12.5[%] out of deductions , medical aid must be subsidised by UCT everybody must be in medical aid, equal treatment because now there is a problem of crying for what others [are] having .They use to have one hour lunch, half an hour tea time but now its one hour lunch for the whole day," he said.
