Court orders Penny Sparrow to pay R150 000
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Equality Court in Scottburgh has ordered Penny Sparrow to pay R150 000 to The Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation after she made racist comments on social media.
The ANC took her to court over her Facebook at the beginning of this year, in which she referred to black people as monkeys.
When proceedings began this morning, her daughter, Charmaine Cowie pleaded with the court to postpone the matter to allow her mother to secure legal representation but the court declined the request saying the matter would go ahead.

Sparrow was not in court, with Cowie telling the court that the former real estate agent was an unemployed pensioner and feared for her life.
The court has also warned Sparrow against making any further inflammatory comments.
The Equality Court sitting at the Scottburgh Magistrates Court has issued an order prohibiting Penny Sparrow from posting hate speech.
