Council: Dept works towards resolution for Jozini, Nquthu
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance is studying all legal options to intervene in the hung municipalities that have not been able to reach agreements.
Talks collapsed in both the Jozini and Nquthu local municipalities with political parties failing to reach quorum in council meetings on the filling of vacancies for office bearers.
MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube says the municipalities are yet to arrive at a resolution.
"The spectacular failure by the political parties has now passed the problem to us to try and assist them in resolving the issues.
"It is therefore not surprising that some of the parties concerned now want to make Cogta and the MEC in particular a scapegoat for their failures to be leaders that act in the best interest of the communities," she said.

Meanwhile, the department has condemned the torching of several properties owned by government in the Mshwathi Local Municipality.
Dube-Ncube says damage from the protest over the election of ward councillors is estimated to cost R10-million.
