Scores left homeless after fire guts informal settlement
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Around 50 people have been left homeless after a fire - believed to have been started by illegal electricity connections - blazed through the Blackburn informal settlement near Umhlanga, on Friday.
Firefighters from the eThekwini Fire and Rescue Services sprang into action after being alerted to the blaze, and were able to stop the flames from spreading further.
A total of 21 dwellings were destroyed. DA Ward Councillor, Heinz de Boer, says illegal electrical connections are rife in this particular informal settlement.
De Boer says those who have been affected have been staying with others in the area.
"There have been several donations of food, clothing and blankets that have been made and Disaster Management officials will further continue to assist the people," he said.
De Boer said attempts were already underway to rebuild some of the dwellings, adding that the City hoped to have more rebuilt soon - with the assistance of Disaster Management officials.
