Arguments heard in Inquiry into Phiyega's fitness to hold office
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
The inquiry into Riah Phiyega’s fitness to hold office has begun.
The suspended national police commissioner has not been at work since October last year.
The Claassen Board of Inquiry, which is sitting in Centurion, was set up President Jacob Zuma after damning findings by Farlam Commission of Inquiry against Phiyega and the South African Police Service on the Marikana killings.
Arguments to establish the scope of proceedings and who should testify have been heard.
Evidence leader Ismail Jamie has argued that anyone, even people who didn't testify before the Farlam Commission, can be called before this Inquiry.
He maintains some information could be relevant now. However, Advocate William Mokhari, acting for Phiyega disagrees saying any testimony or questioning must be relevant to the terms of reference as set out by the President.
He maintains the evidence leaders can call anyone as long as their testimony is only relevant to Phiyega's conduct in the Marikana matter.
