AMCU to consider mining jobs deal
Updated | By Benedict Ngwenya
Stakeholders including unions, government and the Chamber of Mines yesterday signed a commitment to stem the the looming 19 000 job losses in the sector.
The 10 interventions range from agreeing to enhance productivity to saving jobs when mines intend to be mothballed or sold.
AMCU's Joseph Mathunjwa says while the plan looks good on paper, some issues still need to be addressed.
"In any good plan you might have some concerns of which we raised through the Department of Mineral Resources(DMR). Why does the DMR not suspend the licenses of those mines that are not in compliance with their social labour plan? The licenses must be taken away immediately and given to other people," he said.
