DUT student arrested for public violence

Following yet another day of student protests at the Durban University of Technology, one student has been arrested for public violence at the institution's Steve Biko campus.

He was among students who earlier hurled rocks at police who'd been sent to the campus to keep an eye on violent protests which broke this morning.

Tyres were also burned Steve Biko Road.

A short while later, around 10 students wearing EFF t-shirts were seen gathering outside a nearby police station - accusing police officers of having pushed a student believed to be pregnant.

They said they wanted to open a case against the police - but left the station without doing so.

Meanwhile, management at DUT is preparing to meet with the SRC tomorrow amidst the unrest.

The demonstrations started yesterday - with students stating they want answers regarding historical debt and the 4000 students who they claim qualify for NSFAS but haven't received funding this year.

The academic programme has been suspended at all DUT campuses for today and tomorrow.

DUT's Alan Khan says all campuses are now closed and no one, staff included, will be permitted inside for safety reasons.

"To have something as extremely violent as you saw this morning, on our streets and entering our campuses is just unacceptable. And we hope that sanity prevails, and that tomorrow when we meet with the SRC and the Department of Higher Education and Training, and NSFAS - that we really can find a way forward and we can move on - because we have just a few weeks left to go until the exams of 2016," he said.
