Online scams contd

Clive heard our last show about a new online classifieds scam. He says he's also been contacted by conartists after advertising an expensive camera lens on Gumtree. He says he was contacted by three JHB buyers, all with similar stories. They replied via the mail function that they wanted Clive's cell number to obtain more info.  They then rang him, and said that actually the item was for a friend working on assignment in West Africa (one was for a photo shoot in JHB the next day), and they wanted to courier it up there. For this they would pay an additional R2000. Via mail, they then asked Clive for banking details. He gave them the number of a dormant account, which contains all of R3.24! He then received a "confirmation of deposit", fairly official looking, from Nedbank, to his cell phone. Moments later Clive received a call asking if he had got the confirmation, and as it was urgent, he had to get to Postnet and courier the item that very afternoon. Clive's response was that he would do that as soon as the funds reflected in his account.  He says the conman was pretty peeved, and said that as it was Nedbank to Absa, it would take two days. Clive stuck to his guns. The other guy hung up the phone. The next 'buyer' went through a similar pitch the following day, but Clive stopped him and said that he held accounts at ALL banks, and  would give him an account at the same bank as his, so that the deposit would reflect in his account immediately. He also hung up! Clive believes it's worth sharing his experience, and says the conmen seem to target bigger ticket, electronic items.  Thanks for the info Clive and well done for being so on the ball!
