Tyla has become the first solo African artist to have a song hit one billion streams on Spotify.

'Water' currently has 1,000,712,035 streams on the music platform.

"This milestone is a testament to her talent, hard work, and the power of music to transcend borders. Tyla’s success is an inspiration to aspiring artists across Africa and the world, and we are honoured to have played a part in her journey," Spotify said about the newest member of its Billions Club.

The South African singer's breakout single was released in July 2023. It peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the US Afrobeats Songs.

'Water' spent an entire year at number one on the Afrobeats chart, securing a new Billboard record for the star.

The song has also won several awards, including a Grammy.

There was some confusion online as to whether Tyla really was the first African solo artist to reach a billion, especially considering the success of Tems, Wizkid, Rema and Burna Boy.

Tems was the first African female to reach one billion streams with 'Wait for U'. However, the song was a collaboration with rappers Drake and Future.

Wizkid was the first African artist to achieve the feat. He featured on Drake's smash hit 'One Dance' with Kyla.

Rems and Selena Gomez's song, 'Calm Down', also passed one billion streams. It was the first African-led song to do so.

In a recent interview with Vogue magazine, Tyla says she always knew she was destined for something big.

“You know when you’ve always felt like you’re destined for something? That you’re going to make it one day? But then when it actually happens… It’s like something you can’t explain. It doesn’t feel real.”
