She explained how winning the award was a dream come true.

"I'm so happy. I'm someone who started music from the streets," she said.

Makhadzi started her music career in Limpopo and she would sing on the streets to promote herself.

She said winning the award was proof that your background shouldn't limit you.

"All I can say is it's possible black child to make it," she said.

Makhadzi said winning the award was the best birthday present she received as she turned 28.

"This is the best birthday ever," she said.

Makhadzi was not the only South African who won a BET Award.

South African pop star Tyla also won two awards at the event, which was held on Sunday in Los Angeles, California.

Tyla walked away with the 'Best New Artist' and 'Best International Act' awards.

"I did not prepare anything, but I just want to say thank you so much to my Tygers, my family, my team. Thank you to BET for always pushing the culture," Tyla said in her speech.

She assured her fans that she would soon resume her performances. "I'm going to be performing soon, so get ready," she added. This comes after Tyla previously cancelled her shows in the US and Europe following an injury.

Another South African star who made it to the BET Awards was Focalistic.

He shared a video congratulating Tyla in person at the awards.
