LISTEN: Olivia Rodrigo takes center stage with new album ‘Sour’
Updated | By El Broide
One of the most anticipated albums of the year has finally arrived.
She’s had the most incredible start to her music career and
after topping charts around the world with her debut single ‘Driver’s Licence’,
Olivia Rodrigo is making waves once again as she drops her debut album, ‘Sour’, this week.
The project includes the star’s massive hit as well as singles ‘Déjà Vu’ and ‘Good 4 U’. The latter is currently expected to debut atop next week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart.
On ‘Sour’, the 18-year-old musician displays her
incredible talent for capturing complex emotions in high-impact, dynamic pop
songs. The album, entirely co-written by Rodrigo, embodies a minimalist yet
mesmerising form of alt-pop. Each song is centered on her beautifully detailed
storytelling, unforgettably original narrative voice, and undeniable boldness.

While quite angsty, the album’s magic comes from Olivia’s vulnerability as she deliberately taps into her deepest heartache. “There’s nothing like sitting at the piano in my bedroom and writing a really sad song,” she says. “It’s truly my favourite thing in the world; it’s so inspiring to see my music affect people and maybe help them to feel less alone too.”

It’s this that inspired the title of the singer’s debut. “I’m also fascinated by the idea of a relationship going sour—how a person you loved so much and told all your secrets to can become the person you can’t stand,” Rodrigo explains. “For me, the goal of all music is to take these complicated feelings and externalize them in a way that makes people feel seen.”
