Kelly Clarkson reveals why she stayed in her marriage
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Kelly talks candidly about her failed marriage and how finally getting the courage to leave made her a better mother.
Grammy Award winner Kelly Clarkson is sharing new details about her divorce from Brandon Blackstock.
The 41-year-old appeared on a recent episode of Glennon Doyle's 'We Can Do Hard Things' podcast. She talked about her new album, 'Chemistry', and how the highs and lows of her relationship inspired some of the songs.
Kelly and Brandon were married for almost seven years before calling it quits in early 2021. They have two daughters together - River Rose (8) and Remington Alexander (7).
The former couple was involved in a messy divorce that ended with Kelly having to pay her ex-husband more than R3-million in spousal and child support payments.
Kelly told Glennon that she took a long time to leave the marriage, adding that her ego got in the way.
"My ego, I'm like, 'I can do this. I can handle so much. My ego is, 'I can control my actions, I can control my reactions, I can do this and I can reach this person and I can get through.' It becomes a little bit of your ego that gets in the way" she said.
The 'Stronger' singer added that she didn't want her children to go through what she did when her parents got divorced.
"Also, If I'm being completely honest, we don't want to do what we saw done. I'm like, I don't want my kids to be those kids at school."

Kelly also opened up about how Glennon's book, 'Untamed', gave her the courage she needed to walk away from her marriage.
The author wrote about how she stayed in her previous marriage because of her little girl. Kelly said it wasn't easy to leave.
"You think about your kids and, you're like, 'Oh man, I wonder like how's this going to affect them?' I remember how it affected me and he has also been through divorces with his family... Nobody wants that. You try and you try and you try. But then you figure out, well I don't want them growing up in this unhealthy [environment]."
