Angie Stone's children have thanked her fans for their "love and well wishes during what is an extremely difficult time".

The award-winning singer, known for hits like 'Brotha' and 'I Wish I Didn't Miss You', was killed in a car crash on March 1. She was 63.

Stone, her band and other crew were travelling home in a Sprinter van after a show in Montgomery, Alabama, when the vehicle was involved in a collision with a truck.

The cause of the crash is still unknown. Stone is the only person who died.

Her children, Diamond and Michael, released a statement on behalf of the family this week.

"Angie was an example for black women and girls everywhere. Angie also loved and championed for black men with her Number One Hit entitled 'Brotha'," the statement read.

"[She] was a pioneer of rap music that began with a female rap trio, 'The Sequence' and ultimately led to her solo career that defined neo soul."

The family also revealed that the R&B singer was also attending college for ministry.

"Her love of God and her faith led her to have a deep desire to share her belief in God and bring more people to Christ."

Stone's children have asked for privacy as they mourn.

"Diamond and Michael, along with the rest of Angie‘s family, want to thank you for reaching out, but also asked that you respect their privacy as they grieve the loss of their beloved mother."

Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for the singer. Beyoncé shared a message on her website praising the two-time Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards winner.

"Thank you for your voice, your strength, and your artistry. Your incredible legacy will live on forever. Rest in peace, Angie Stone."
