Massive swells leave beachfront businesses drowning under repair costs

Business owners situated along the Durban beachfront say damage from massive waves that pummeled the promenade on Sunday will hit them in their pockets.
Some restaurants at the popular North Beach were flooded - following yesterday's freak storm.

Gaby Ndwane manages one of the restaurants in the area. She says clean-up operations are already underway.
"It was a scary experience, it did happen before and it took about a day. People ran away - we didn't make much money after that; people were more interested in what happened outside than inside," she said.
Another business owner says they're worried the waves will flood their properties again.

"Yesterday around 4pm there was a big wave coming from the sea, and we all ran away. When we came back we saw that our door was broken," he said.
The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and eThekwini Municipality are assessing the damage.
