Durban tidal waves: eThekwini, Cogta counting costs of damage
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
A massive clean-up on all Durban beaches continues today after tidal waves hit our shores at the weekend causing severe damage.
Some beaches - which have been closed to swimmers and lifeguards - will remain closed until debris and excess sand are removed.
EThekwini Municipality and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs said in a joint media briefing they would be monitoring the situation along our beaches until the rising spring tide subsides.

Although a monetary value hasn't been attached to the damage yet, the city's team as well as the department's personnel on the ground have taken stock of the damage.

Most of the damage occurred outside several restaurants on the coast.
Cogta's acting MEC Bongi Sithole-Moloi says the cost of the damage will be calculated once all assessments have been completed.
Beachgoers are still urged not to swim at the closed beaches including Battery Beach, Country Club and eThekwini Beach.
