Tests conducted after nine children under the age of five were treated for febrile gastroenteritis - symptoms linked to contracting listeriosis - at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital led researchers to the source of the food-borne disease.
Following this lead, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases says environmental health practitioners together with the NICD, World Health Organisation advisers and Agriculture Department officials visited all food production, and packaging sites.
Extensive food product and environmental sampling showed that over 30% of the samples collected at the Enterprise factory in Polokwane tested positive for listeria monocytogenes.
Consumers have been advised to remove ready-to-eat food products believed to be contaminated.
Some supermarket chain stores will be allowing the return of these products.
