Three unique uses for wine
Updated | By Andrew Hallett
And the world gasped: "Wait, what? Why would you waste wine?"
Wine, glorious wine. There are few things better than coming home from work after a hard day at the office and relaxing with a glass of vino.
We are very lucky in South Africa to have some of the world's finest wine farms right on our doorstep, with the Western Cape known globally for producing numerous award-winning vintages.
But apart from sipping on the delicious beverage, what else can wine be used for?
NB: If you use wine for useful tasks, you aren't actually wasting any of it. You also need to remember, there is more than enough to go around.
1 - Catching flies
As much as us humans love some wine, so do flies. They can't resist it, just like a group of ladies on book club night. Take a glass and pour in about 100ml of wine. Cover with cellophane and poke a few holes in the top. The flies will enter the glass through the holes and die a drunken death. The cellophane will mean they can't escape. We can think of worse ways to kick the bucket...
2 - Frozen flavouring for food
A lot of people cook with wine, but there isn't always an open bottle lying around (because you finished it last night!). This tip will ensure you always have wine to cook with. Simply freeze some wine in an ice tray and pop in cubes when cooking. So simple, so flavourful!
3 - Clean your windows
White wine, when left opened, slowly turns to vinegar. Just before it turns, you aren't going to drink it, so why not use it to clean your windows? Mix some white wine with water in a spray bottle, then go to town on those dirty windows. The alcohol helps to cut through the dirt and leave you with shiny windows you will be proud to look out of.
