Five places in your house you may not have thought to clean
Updated | By Andrew Hallett
There is only so much television you can watch - so it is time to get off the couch and put your time at home to good use!
We are now on Day 3,256 of South Africa's national lockdown. Not really, but it sure feels like it.
While you will never complete Netflix, you sure are trying. However, now is the time to switch off the TV and do some dirty work.
Here are five places in your home that you may never think of cleaning, but you really should:
Top Of Doors
You never see the top of your doors, so you are in for a nasty surprise once you start cleaning.
Stand on a chair and use a cloth with warm soapie water. The amount of dust you will find will require a few cleans, but you will feel good about yourself once done.
This will also save you the embarrassment of dirty doors when Shaquille O'Neal comes for tea post lockdown.

Light Fittings
Bugs. Get ready for many dead bugs. Eew.
As light fittings are out of reach, we seldom think to clean them. Get on a chair and give them a good wipe, but please switch them off before doing so, as our healthcare professionals have enough to deal with right now.
If you have a fitting which screws in, unscrew it and give it a good wash in the sink. Don't feel too bad about the dead bugs, as they died a happy death, doing what they love most (we think... the science is still pending on this).
Behind The Fridge
Remember this song from your childhood, "If you go down to the woods today, you're in for a big surprise"?
While the song had no sinister connotations, that line is ominous. That can be applied to pulling out your fridge and cleaning behind it - the things you will find will likely freak you out. Trust us.
Give the area behind your fridge a good clean, including the floors. The next time you use your fridge, all the food inside will taste that much better, as you will know what has been removed. Or you will never be able to eat again after what you have seen. Everyone is different.

Curtain Rails
Like the top of doors and light fittings, curtain rails are best friends with dust. It is as if they contain little dust magnets and the curtain rail manufacturers are in some weird relationship with Mother Nature.
I digress.
Take the curtains off and remove the rail. Give the rails a good clean with warm soapie water. This might also be a good chance for you to chuck your curtains in the washing machine to bring about an extra element of freshness.
Bottom Of The Toaster
Mmmmm. The smell of buttered toast is a thing of pure beauty, especially on a cold winter's morning.
However, have you ever stopped to think about what lurks at the bottom of your toaster after use - or the 10,000th use as you have never removed the little tray at the bottom.
Not all toasters are created equal, so if yours doesn't have a removable tray at the bottom, just turn it upside down and give it a little shake. The tiny pieces of neglected bread will come out and you will have a toaster fit for a king again.

DISCLAIMER: Please unplug all appliances before cleaning. The same goes for turning off light switches before cleaning your fittings. Cleanliness is next to godliness, but now is not the time to meet your maker...
