South African traditional amagwinya recipe

Learn how to make this delicious South African snack!

Amagwinya, aka vetkoeks, are easy to make, delicious, and perfect for the cold winter season. They are crispy on the outside and warm and fluffy inside.
They can be enjoyed with a variety of sweet and savoury fillings such as mince, atchaar, polony, sausage or with a stew.

Vetkoeks are easy to make and they require only a few ingredients.
Ingredients:
8 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
2 cups lukewarm water or enough to cover the dough
5gram active dry yeast
1 teaspoons salt
4 cups oil for frying
Method:
- In a bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together.
- Pour in lukewarm water.
- Cover the whole bowl with plastic and set aside for an hour, until the dough has risen. Ensure that no air can get through.
- Remove the plastic cover and mix the dough a little bit.
- Shape the dough into balls (whichever size you prefer).
- Heat oil in a pot until very hot.
- Place the shaped dough into the oil and deep fry, changing sides, until golden brown.
- Remove from the oil with a draining spoon and drain on paper towel.
- Enjoy!
