Many of us are familiar with the saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away".
In case you are wondering how that is possible, it is because of all the incredible health benefits apples have.
According to an article published on Eating Well which was reviewed by Dietitian Jessica Ball, the nutrition breakdown for 1 medium apple is:

0 g fat
25 g carbohydrates
4 g fiber
8 mg vitamin C
98 IU vitamin A
195 mg potassium

The University of Illinois reports that soluble fiber found in apples helps prevent cholesterol buildup in the lining of blood vessel walls. This is supported by a report by Healthline which states that apples contain pectin, which may boost heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Eating Well publication also states that the fiber in apples lowers bad LDL cholesterol and increases good HDL cholesterol.
It is important to note that most of the fiber is found in the skin, so don't peel it off. Fiber also helps with digestion.
Apples can help you eat less because they are filling, even though they contain less than 100 calories. It is important to know that your body needs calories for energy, however, too many calories can cause weight gain. Everyday Health reports that people need a minimum of 1,200 calories daily to stay healthy.
Apples also contain potassium which helps relax the blood vessels. Medicine Net states that the potassium found in apples helps reduce the risk of high blood pressure and related cardiovascular complications.
Carbohydrates found in apples provide energy for the body. One site reports that carbohydrates fuel the brain, kidneys, heart muscles, and central nervous system.
Apples have Vitamin C which helps form and maintain bones, skin, and blood vessels, and it's an antioxidant.
The Vitamin A found in apples is vital for cell recognition, vision, immune function, and reproduction, reports Medical News Today.
So, go right ahead and grab an apple. It will do you good.
