Four ways to detox your body naturally
Updated | By Tamlyn Canham
Here are four ways you can naturally detoxify your body.
Do you need to flush out toxins from your system? You might want to try a detox.
Detoxing has been practised for centuries, with many turning to the method to help "clean" their bodies from the inside out or in an effort to lose weight.
Detoxification has also been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine systems.
East Coast Radio presenter Thandolwethu is currently on a fitness journey and has decided to go on a detox to "restart" her body.
While the verdict is still out on just how healthy detoxes are for your body, the benefits are said to include reduced inflammation, healthy skin, and a strengthened immune system.
We've put together a list of four of the best way you can detox.
Before starting a detox it is important to first consult with your doctor. Detoxes are also dangerous for people with diabetes and pre-existing medical conditions. Nursing mothers and children should also avoid them.
Drink enough water
While adults are advised to drink at least eight glasses of water daily, many people fail to do that. Drinking water is especially important when detoxing as it can help flush your body. According to Livestrong.com, the average woman needs to drink around 2.7 litres of water daily, while men need to down 3.7 litres. Drinking too little water can cause dehydration, but drinking too much can imbalance your electrolytes.
Eat fibre
According to Dr.Shel, eating more fibre will help get rid of toxins that build up in your colon and intestines. A build-up of toxins can prevent nutrients from being absorbed by your body. It can also lead to weight gain. Brown rice, couscous, fruits and vegetables are good sources of fibre. Try beetroot, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, and seaweed.
Stock up on power fruits
A fruit detox is one of the most popular methods of detoxing. Not only do they taste good but fruits like apples are rich in fibre. Apples also contain phytochemicals and pectin, which aids in detoxing. Good detoxing fruits include lemons, berries, papaya, pineapple, and pomegranate. Avocados are also detox friendly.
Herbs and spices
Herbs and spices are said to be great aids for natural detoxification. Herbs such as ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper are often used in cleanses because they are believed to help fight bad bacteria. Dandelion root, burdock, and milk thistle are also said to protect the liver. Herbs can also be used to make herbal teas for detoxing.
