Four vegetables you wouldn't think contain sugar
Updated | By Poelano Malema
You will be surprised to know that these vegetables are not sugar-free.
Vegetables are some of the healthiest foods, especially when prepared correctly.
Many of them can be eaten raw or can be added to stews, soups, juices etc.
Another good thing about vegetables is that most of them are acceptable in many diets. However, if you are looking for a sugar-free diet, then you might be surprised to know that sweet potato and sweet corn are not the only vegetables that contain sugar. So, although some vegetables contain healthy sugars, you might want to avoid them or consume as little as possible.
Let’s take a look at them below.
Onions
Onions have anti-inflammatory effects.
They are a staple food in many homes across South Africa. They can be eaten raw or mixed with other dishes.
However, though this vegetable is packed with nutrients, it also contains sugar.
According to healthline.com, 100 grams of raw onions consists of 4,2 grams of sugar.
Carrots
Carrots can be enjoyed as a healthy snack or used to make salads such as coleslaw.
They are a good source of beta carotene, fiber, vitamin K1, potassium, and antioxidants.
Fruitsandveggies.com reports that one medium-size carrot contains about 2.9 grams of sugar (4 grams = 1 teaspoon).
So, if you want to avoid sugar, rather minimise the number of carrots you eat.
Beetroot
Beetroot is a favourite in South Africa. Whether you drink it as juice or serve it on its own as a salad or vegetable, it is delicious.
Beetroot is also packed with nutrients such as protein and fiber.
According to healthline.com, one cup (136 grams) of boiled beetroot contains 6.8 grams of sugar.
Potatoes
Potatoes are used to make potato chips, salads, and are also eaten on their own. They have fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6.
Healthyeating.sfgate.com reports that potatoes contain three main types of sugars: fructose, sucrose, and glucose. It also states that each 100-gram serving of potatoes contain 1 gram of naturally occurring sugar.
Medical News Today's website states that the most healthy way to cook potatoes is to boil, steam, or microwave them without adding other ingredients. This will ensure that they are very low in sugar, salt, and fat.
