FOOD: Two tips to keep your avocado fresher for longer

Don't waste your avocado. Here's a simple but effective tip to keep them fresh longer.

South Africans enjoy avocado season from March to September.

There are countless health benefits of eating avocado. 

- Avocados contain nutrients. 

- They help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.  

- The lutein and zeaxanthin found in avocado help with vision. 

- Avocados contain Vitamin K. 

- They also have Folate which can help pregnant women have a healthy pregnancy.

- Avocados have fiber.

- They have monounsaturated fatty acids which are beneficial in preventing chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease.

Avocados have many great benefits, but they don't have a long shelf life.

To keep them fresher for longer, here are tricks you can try:

- Put the avocado in the fridge. You can even put them in the fridge after opening them but right before they turn brown. When putting your avocado in the fridge, it's best to store it in an airtight container. 

- You can also submerge the whole avocados in a jar of water. This trick can prolong the freshness of the avocado for up to two weeks.
