Updated | By Poelano Malema
Taking care of your weave will leave it looking great and fresh!
A weave is a hair extension fitted into human hair by sewing, gluing or clipping.
According to un-ruly.com, weaves have been in existence since 3400 BC and originated in Egypt.
They can cost a couple a lot of money, depending on the quality and length.
Weaves have a lot of benefits, including:
- Weaves give you the flexibility to change your style.
- Weaves can save you money because you buy it once and can rock it often.
- They are low maintenance.
- Weaves help protect your hair from heat damage.
- For those struggling with hair line issues, weaves can conceal thinning areas.

However, whatever weave you have, it is important to know how to take good care of it.
Let's look at some tips to take care of your weave:
- Shampoo your weave every 7 to 14 days. This will leave it looking fresh and will also help keep your scalp clean.
- Deep condition your hair every time you shampoo and cover it with a towel and allow it to air dry. Blow drying is not advisable as it can cause damage to your weave because of constant heat application.
- Moisturise your weave with an oil-based serum to make it look shiny, vibrant, manageable, and easy to style.
- Use a paddle brush to brush your weave. Brushing your weave helps to make it less tangled. Avoid using fine tooth combs as this can cause the hair to break.
- Wrap your hair with a silk or satin cap before going to bed at night. This will help keep it untangled.
- Ensure that your own hair and scalp are protected by moisturising them with hair food or a moisturiser. Failure to do so might cause your scalp to itch and ruin your weave.
